Is Trust Built from Transparency?

Transparency and Altruism: Keys to Business Success

The Dalai Lama tweeted on November 5, 2018:

“Be honest, truthful, and altruistic. If you concern yourself with taking care of others, there’ll be no room for lies, bullying and cheating. If you’re truthful you can live transparently, which will enable you to establish trust, the basis for making friends.”

The current Dalai Lama, the 14th in the line of succession, has served in that role since February of 1940. Think of how much has changed about the world in those nearly eight decades. We’ve seen monumental changes in the geopolitical space. We’ve sent a man to the moon. The evolution of the automobile, electronics and other technologies have literally changed the world. In 1940, the average American household did not have a television – today, we can live stream events on our watches and telephones.

The idea that the Dalai Lama is tweeting at all is pretty amazing when you think about it. The spiritual leader of the Tibetan people represents a tradition dating back hundreds of years – but has adopted this sign of modernity as a way of conferring traditional values. That’s the beauty of the tweet itself – while the merit of transparency as a means of effecting trust has been apparent to some people for generations, it has become increasingly apparent to a wider swath of the world.

Whether in business or life, transparency equals trust.

That essential truth hasn’t changed, but at this time of exponential growth, even the Dalai Lama has an advanced megaphone to broadcast it to his nearly 19 million online followers.

A few days earlier he tweeted:

“We need to be determined to achieve positive change, and also to take a long view of what needs to be done. What is important is not to become demoralized. Optimism leads to success; pessimism leads to defeat. One person can be the source of inspiration for many others.”

Optimizing your personal transparency and Positive Mental Attitude does not take a special skill set or level of wealth. It doesn’t depend on your gender or ethnicity or religion. All it takes is a will to be the change that you want to see, and by putting others first, your actions will provide a greater end result that is a true key to success.
